Germany’s Higher Education System is mainly divided into three types;
- Universities
- Universities of applied sciences
- Colleges of art, film and music
There are programs available in both English and German languages. There are some other courses imparted partly in both German and English.
Programs in Germany
- Bachelor’s degree –A., B.Sc., Bachelor of Engineering, etc Undergraduate programme has 6 semesters which can be completed in 4 years, including a 1-year programme called Foundation year.
- Master’s degree –A., M.Sc., Master of Engineering, and etc
Master’s programme typically lasts for either 1.5 years or 2 years.
- Doctoral degree –PhD programme with completion of a research paper
For international students, who wish to study in Germany in English, a large number of programs are available at the Master’s level and undergraduate level.
1. Engineering : Germany is also known as the technology hub of Europe.
The most popular and one of the top courses to study in Germany, engineering which mostly translates into an MS degree, attracts nearly 25% of international students to the country or over 71,000 international students reflecting the popularity of the course in the international circles. Some of the engineering specializations that students opt for are Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Neno Engineering, Mechatronics among others.
2. Business And Finance : The most popular course in this field is Master of Business Administration. The course acquaints its students with the details of the field and polishes their entrepreneurial and managerial skills. Business Management is the best course in Germany for a student planning to do an MBA or other business operated field. This course will help students to grasp the basics of business management through foundation knowledge.
3. Medicine and Dentistry : Doctors and dentists are valuable professionals throughout the entire world. Health is seen as one of the most important factors of having high wellbeing in any country. Because of that, medical occupations are the top paid degrees in Germany.
A doctor or a dentist is expected to make the highest amount of money out of anyone with other degrees. The average annual pay is €79,538.
4. Architecture : Low interest rates and increasing demand for housing have provided for positive trade in the construction industry and thus for bright career prospects for architects in Germany.
German universities cost low or no tuition fees..
The cost also depends on what degree you are pursuing i.e. Technical, Management etc. and also varies according to the type of institutes i.e. Public or Private.
German universities (Public Universities) are fully funded by the German government, meaning that neither home nor international students pay tuition fees. Students need only to pay a minimal amount of fee approximately € 500 per semester.
Private institutions can cost up to 20,000 EUR per year. This fluctuates depending on the institution of study and chosen degree program – engineering or business degrees are usually higher in cost than social sciences, for instance.
The living cost in Germany is approximately € 8700 per year.
- Winter semester or Autumn Session starts in September or October. The application period begins in early May and ends on 15th July.
- Summer semester or Spring Session starts in March or April. The application period begins in early December and ends on 15th January.
At the Bachelors level, a majority of the courses are offered in the German language. This requires students to be proficient up to C1 level in the German language.
- IELTS A minimum of 6.5/7 band is recommended and/or proficiency in the German language to get into a German Public University.
- TOEFL A minimum score required is between 75 to 81.
